Given Joe Biden’s recent statements about MAGA Republicans and the threat they are to democracy, one would believe the Democrats would be tough on crime and support local law enforcement. But that wasn’t the case not so long ago when they stood by the Black Lives Matter movement to defund police departments all over America. Wanting a country free of crime and police, Democratic strongholds like Chicago are a prime example of what happens when leaders criticize law enforcement. Just over the Labor Day weekend, a staggering fifty-five people were shot in Chicago, with 11 of them dying. What is even more shocking is how Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown praised the number for being lower than last year.

Giving some statistics on the violence seen in Chicago, David Brown admitted that shootings were down 15 percent when compared to the same weekend in 2021. As for shooting victims, that was also down by 23 percent. He added, “We continue to see significant declines in gun violence in the city with over 600 fewer victims of gun violence so far this year.”

When looking at people killed in 2022 in Chicago, that number sits at a little over 460. During the same period in 2021, the city was climbing over 540 homicides. 2021 marked a 25-year high for violence in Chicago. And remember, at the helm is Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Calling for more officers to join, Superintendent David Brown added, “We are struggling obviously with way too many carjackings. We had an arrest of a juvenile offender on September 2 and charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm. We need more consequences for violent offenders regardless of your age.”

In Philadelphia, Mayor Jim Kenney addressed 38 people being shot over the Labor Day weekend, tweeting, “The amount of violent incidents over this holiday weekend is devastating and unacceptable. Philadelphians deserve to be safe in their communities. My deepest sympathies go out to all those affected by this senseless violence, especially families that have lost loved ones.”

As for Mayor Lori Lightfoot, she received criticism from a fellow Democrat, State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford. The State Representative called for action, “Too many babies have been killed. Too many fathers have been killed. Too many mothers have been killed. Too many brothers have been killed. And this has to stop. And the only way you stop it is you have a system in place that’s going to go after criminals. We cannot allow them to continue to run our communities and make our lives less safe. So only a few of them we could get them. Once we eliminate these criminals off the street, people will live in peace, and we can do it. We know where they’re at.”
