AUBURN, WA – Authorities in Washington are actively searching for a suspect involved in a car bombing that occurred in Auburn at a funeral in late August. No one was hurt in the bombing, according to authorities, but the at-large suspect reportedly opened fire upon those who tried to follow their vehicle whilst fleeing the scene.

On August 23rd, authorities say an unknown passenger inside of a dark sedan placed an explosive inside a vehicle of an individual who was attending a funeral service at the Mountain View Cemetery. While no one was injured when the explosive went off, the surrounding trees – as well as the vehicle – were destroyed.

One of the city employees who were present at the funeral service noted that somewhere between 60 to 80 people were in attendance at the time of the incident. Some of those in attendance saw the suspect toss something into a parked black Lexus sedan.

“They saw a guy run up to the window and break it. Then, not even 30 seconds later, the car exploded.”

Video was captured at the scene of the incident, showing the aftermath of the explosion while the vehicle was still burning.

City employees present at the time of the incident attempted to follow the dark sedan, described as an Acura RL with no license plates, involved in the planting of the explosive, but the passenger inside of the fleeing vehicle reportedly began shooting at those who were pursuing them.

“The guy popped out of the window and fired four or five shots at me and my co-worker,” stated one of the city employees while speaking with a local news outlet, adding, “We just ducked, put it in reverse, and got back here.”

The city employee, who was reasonably shaken up from being shot at, is glad to be alive, saying, “I don’t know what to make of it. It happened so fast, and I got a family I have to feed and take care of, so I got to get home at night.”

Washington State Police, as well as the Auburn Police Department, are actively pursuing leads that will lead to identifying those involved in the bombing. The identity of the owner of the vehicle bombed, who is presumably the intended victim in the case, has not been released publicly.

The Auburn Police Department released an image of the suspect vehicle being sought, although the image available leaves much to be desired in terms of quality.

Kolby Crossley, a spokesperson for the Auburn Police Department, said of the case, “It’s a very unusual situation. It’s one we really want to figure out. The passenger was the one who threw the explosive device, and the passenger was also the one who shot the rounds. But there was also someone who was driving him.”

Officials have not publicly shared a possible motive for the bombing. Anyone with information on the incident or suspects involved is urged to contact the Auburn Police Department’s tip line at 253-288-7403.
