SAN CARLOS, CA – A mother of two was reportedly beheaded in broad daylight earlier in September, with reports indicating the suspect used a “samurai sword” to carry out the horrific murder in front of onlookers. Furthermore, the decedent, who’d previously been romantically involved with the suspect, had reportedly taken out a restraining order on the suspect.

The incident occurred shortly before noon on September 8th, where witnesses reportedly flagged San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Laurel Street after observing what was described as an assault in progress.

By the time deputies arrived on the scene, it was reportedly already too late, as the woman’s head had been severed. Lieutenant Eamonn Allen from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office admitted the deputies who arrived on the scene “were a little beset” by the “nature” of the scene.

“Anytime someone loses their life, it’s certainly a tragedy. As far as the shocking nature of it, I do know that the deputies that first arrived on scene were a little beset by the scene. We are providing them peer support. We are also providing support for the witnesses that were on scene as well because there were several civilian witnesses.”

A man later identified as 33-year-old Jose Rafael Solano-Landaeta had reportedly returned to the scene after deputies arrived and were taken into custody under suspicion of murder.

Officials have only described the weapon used in the homicide as a “stabbing instrument,” as they are reportedly still searching for it. However, witness accounts have described the missing weapon as being a “samurai sword.”

The identity of the victim has not been released by officials, but reports note that she was the mother of a seven-year-old and a one-year-old, and she’d also taken out a restraining order against Solano-Landaeta prior to her untimely passing.

Local reports noted that Solano-Landaeta has a history of violent offenses and issues with mental illness, but no specifics have been brought to light on what those prior brushes with the law entail. Investigators did confirm that there were prior domestic violence calls to the victim’s home she’d once shared with the suspect.

Chapele Thorborne, who lived in the same neighborhood as the victim, told a local news outlet that he knew both the victim and Solano-Landaeta, saying, “They seemed like they loved each other.” The victim and suspect had apparently moved into the neighborhood approximately three years earlier, with Thorborne saying of the horrific murder, “It was kind of a shock, you know. This is a nice neighborhood. So, it’s a shock.”
