TUCSON, AZ – A 25-year-old armed male suspect was fatally shot by Tucson Police officers this past August following a physical altercation that occurred between patrons inside of a hookah lounge, where authorities were informed one of the combative patrons brandished a firearm during the fight.

Officials released the bodycam and surveillance footage regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred during the early morning hours of August 20th outside of a hookah lounge located along the 3700 block of South 16th Avenue, where officers responded to the fight involving a firearm.

By the time officers arrived on the scene, reportedly, the original parties involved in the fight had left the area. However, while conversing with staff from the lounge, officers learned that a second physical altercation had broken out inside the establishment.

Surveillance footage obtained from inside of the lounge depicting the second fight reportedly shows 25-year-old Adum Mahamat involved in a multi-person brawl, where he can be seen throwing a punch at an individual before several other patrons nearby try pushing Mahamat away.

Later on, in the footage from inside of the lounge, Mahamat appears to drop something amid the scuffle – ostensibly his firearm – which he quickly retrieved from the ground, but what seems to be his holster for the weapon can be seen falling from his waistline as he approached the establishment’s exit. As evidenced by the footage from inside the lounge, some of the patrons were clearly alarmed by the presence of the firearm, whilst others appeared to be completely oblivious to its presence.

While officers were approaching the lounge, numerous patrons were seen running from the building, with officers encountering Mahamat shortly thereafter amid the chaotic scene.

Bodycam footage from the incident shows Mahamat holding a firearm with his right hand – appearing to rack the slide as officers repeatedly tell him to put the gun down. Two Tucson Police officers opened fire on Mahamat in light of his failure to comply with orders to drop the weapon.

Officials say it took officers approximately three minutes from the time of the shooting to render aid to Mahamat, as additional resources were needed on the scene to properly secure the area. Mahamat was reportedly transported to an area hospital, where he was later declared deceased.
