FORT WORTH, TX – Forth Worth Police recently released bodycam footage from an incident this past August involving an armed man who was holding a woman hostage at gunpoint inside of a vehicle on I-35. According to officials and corresponding bodycam footage, the suspect was using the hostage as a human shield before officers on scene fatally shot the suspect.

The incident began as a vehicular pursuit on the evening of August 28th “on I-35 near the Belton and Temple area in Central Texas,” according to local reports, with the Troy Police Department being among the first to try and pull the vehicle over after reports came in about someone driving erratically.

It was later determined that a female hostage was behind the wheel of the white Toyota Prius, with a male suspect reportedly holding her at gunpoint and ordering her to drive. The vehicle reportedly crossed over into Fort Worth at approximately 7:23 p.m., still on I-35, with local officers joining in on the pursuit.

Radio traffic from the incident later revealed that whilst the victim/suspect were communicating with police over the phone, the female victim had been shot in the abdomen by the gunman before the line got disconnected.

The vehicle had eventually crashed along the interstate, with Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes providing insight during a press release regarding the officers’ response to the disabled vehicle where the gunman and hostage were still holed-up.

“The female victim and the suspect began struggling, and officers heard a gunshot from inside of the vehicle. Fort Worth PD officers formed a rescue team and approached the vehicle on the driver’s side. When the officers reached the vehicle, they saw that the suspect had the victim laying on top of him and using her as a human shield. Officers gave the suspect multiple commands to drop the weapon that he was pointing at the victim’s abdomen, but he refused to comply.”

As seen on the bodycam footage, officers attempted to get the male suspect to drop his weapon and surrender, but two officers eventually discharged their weapons in light of concerns that the suspect may shoot the victim again.

Despite officers personally rushing the victim to an area hospital, she sadly succumbed to her sustained injuries. As for the suspect, he was reportedly declared deceased at the scene.

Chief Noakes also addressed in the press release that the bodycam footage from the incident reveals that the suspect’s weapon at the time of the police shooting was devoid of a magazine, along with the slide of the weapon being jammed.

However, Chief Noakes emphasized, “Please keep in mind that these body cameras are usually placed around the chest level on the officers, and their point of view is higher than the body camera.”
