During the 2020 Presidential election, America appeared to be split down the middle. Emotions were at an all-time high as movements like Black Lives Matter protested across America, calling for law enforcement to be defunded given the police brutality often showcased on the nightly news. That narrative did more than spread throughout the country as the Democrats also promoted a drastic change in law and order. And since President Joe Biden entered the White House, crime has surged. Not only has crime risen, but Democratic strongholds like California and New York are considered unsafe. Although some like Eric Adams, the Mayor of New York City, hope to fight crime, it seems there aren’t many police officers left to help.

According to a recent article from the New York Post, a staggering 2,000 NYPD officers decided to quit their job before getting their pensions. And if that was startling enough, that is only in 2022. When compared to 2021, the number of police officers quitting climbed a whopping 71%.
NYPD Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch didn’t shy away from the problem, admitting, “We have had retirement waves caused by large academy classes before — they were nothing like this. This exodus is the result of cops in the prime of their careers deciding they have had enough. … The NYPD should stop trying to explain this staffing crisis away. Admit there’s a problem and help us fix it.”
Again, the surge in police officers deciding to leave appears to be a direct result of the constant criticism received by the Democratic Party. Even Lynch noted, “They are leaving for other opportunities where they’re paid better, treated better and have a better quality of life,”
Listening to the officers themselves, Dave, who was a cop in Queens for seven years, explained he had to quit due to the “oppressive work environment. As soon as I left, I felt a huge weight off my shoulders. And the sad part is that the job doesn’t need to be this way. I hear it all the time from friends who went to other police departments. They say, ‘They treat me like an adult here.’”
Users online voiced their opinions on the matter, stating that the police problem is happening in more than just New York. “It’s not just NYPD. It’s happening all over the country. People are tired of the city management and higher ranking officers playing politics. Then they don’t want the officers to enforce some of the laws. Plus, immature officers that can’t function under extreme circumstances all lead to a mess.”
