SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Earlier in August, two paramedics from the San Francisco Fire Department were nearly run over with their own ambulance after an individual broke into the vehicle and took control of it. Luckily, none of the paramedics were injured during the incident.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 29th at approximately 6:55 a.m. at 1717 Harrison Street, according to officials, where an unnamed suspects allegedly smashed the windows of the ambulance using a wooden “stake from a tree.”

Thereafter, the suspect reportedly gained control of the vehicle and attempted to run over the two paramedics whom the ambulance was stolen from.

According to a local NBC News outlet, the suspect drove the ambulance over to a nearby Best Buy parking lot before abandoning the vehicle and hopping over a fence, and eluding authorities. Police have yet to identify the suspect involved in the attack/carjacking.

While the two paramedics weren’t injured during the incident, they were justifiably rattled over the incident. A release from the San Francisco Fire Department – which contained photos of the damaged ambulance – described the at-large suspect as a “Latin Male Adult wearing a black jacket and brown pants 40s.”

Local union San Francisco Firefighters 798 issued a brief press release regarding the matter on Twitter, calling the attack on the paramedics “not acceptable” and referencing another recent incident pertaining to firefighter personnel being targeted with various criminal offenses.

“This morning, two of our members were attacked by someone who used a stake from a tree, smashing windows and trying to assault them. This is another ambulance out of service and two personnel who are rightfully shaken up. This behavior in our City is not acceptable.

Last week our own union hall was broken into and ransacked. [San Francisco Police] responded and caught the burglar but not before he did thousands of dollars of damage. We have all [been] patient enough. It’s time for some changes.”

Tim Finch, a director with San Francisco Fire Union 798, spoke with a local news outlet regarding the incident, saying, “From what it sounds like, this was just random. I haven’t actually spoken to the crew directly yet, but this was unprovoked and out of the blue.”

Despite the seemingly random nature of the violent attack, officials aren’t brushing it off to the side – including the city mayor. Democrat Mayor London Breed issued a statement on the matter, calling the attack on the paramedics “upsetting” and confirmed that investigators are taking the incident “seriously.”

“This is upsetting when it happens to our residents, visitors, and city staff. Our firefighters, paramedics, and all first responders work hard every single day – often putting their lives on the line – to ensure the safety of San Franciscans. We take incidents like this seriously and want to thank SFPD for their involvement in these investigations.”
