NEW YORK CITY, NY – A federal lawsuit has been filed by a former NYPD police officer who was fired for his alleged ties to conservative political figures.

Officer Salvatore Greco was a 14-year veteran of the agency and had been working as a traffic officer. He faced an internal investigation for apparently moonlighting as private security for Roger Stone during the January 6 incident at the Capitol, although he was unpaid for said alleged security. Greco was not accused of entering the Capitol, of which several of Stone’s bodyguards were accused.

Following the disciplinary trial in early August, Greco was fired by Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell.

According to Stone, who spoke with The Gothamist, “He’s being terminated for being a supporter of Donald Trump and a friend of mine.”

Around January 22, 2021, NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau Command Center reportedly received an anonymous letter which said, “To whom it may concern —I am writing to the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau about the D.C. take-ver. PO Salvatore Greco, CTTF, and PO Gregory Nealon, 60 pct., attended the riot at Capitol hill. These officers want to have a civil war in America.”

Photos were also sent which showed Greco” ‘associating’ with Roger Jason Stone, Jr., a self-proclaimed ‘agent provocateur’ who served as strategic counsel to GOP candidates since the 1960s, including President Donald J. Trump.”

Additionally, the note pointed to Greco’s “association” with one Kristin M. Davis, who is reportedly “previously known as the Manhattan Madam, accused of operating a high-end prostitution ring catering to high-profile clients.”

Due to both of the aforementioned being convicted felons, despite President Donald Trump having commuted Stone’s sentence, Greco was found to be in violation of department policy, which states that officers can’t associate knowingly with people who have “engaged in criminal activities.”

However, the policy, said Stone, is “selectively enforced.” For example, current Mayor Eric Adams, who was formerly an NYPD officer, once served as convicted rapist Mike Tyson’s security guard while employed with the NYPD. While an investigation was initiated, Adams was not fired.

“Like many of Eric Adams’ friends and donors, I’m a convicted felon,” Stone said. “The issue here is whether they treated Adams differently than Greco.”

Further, the lawsuit states, “This rule is ‘overbroad’, and its application is in contravention of the First Amendment and must be stricken.”

Greco claimed that the anonymous letter sent to Internal Affairs was politically motivated “because of his first amendment right to support Trump’s America and the ‘political’ paradigm of ‘Making America Great Again.'”

Commanding Officer of Internal Affairs Bureau Group 25 Daniel Cutter and Sergeant of Internal Affairs Bureau Group 25 Jeremy Orenstein investigated the complaints for about five months (from January 22-May 20, 2021).

The investigating officers interviewed Joshua Adam James, the co-founder of the Oath Keepers, as Greco was also accused of providing security for the group. James said he did see Greco in Washington DC between January 5 and 6, 2021, but that Greco “did not partake in anything illegal or violent.”
Greco’s social media accounts had photos of himself with Stone, Davis, members of the Oath Keepers, and members of the Proud Boys (including Enrique Tarrio).
The investigation showed that Greco was not involved in “criminal or subversive activities to overthrow the United States government.” And yet, he was fired. Further, investigators Cutter and Orenstein allegedly told Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters, Ernest Hart, to use “administrative subpoena powers” to “investigate allegations of association narcotics,” which they did. The lawsuit claims this was an abuse of said powers.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner Paul M. Gamble recommended Greco be “separated” from the NYPD on June 10, 2021, because, he said, “Under the circumstances established in the trial record, Respondent’s [Plaintiff SALVATORE J. GRECO] continued presence as a Member of the Service would be corrosive to the mission and values of this Department.” Sewell and the City of New York affirmed this recommendation on August 4, 2022.

Named in the lawsuit are The City of New York, Commissioner Sewell, Deputy Commissioner Hart, Commanding Officer Cutter, and Sergeant Orenstein. The lawsuit seeks $25 million in damages for violations of the First Amendment and the Civil Rights Act of 1871.

Greco released a statement following the filing of the lawsuit, which read:

“Despite a 14-year [sic] unblemished career of serving the people of New York as a New York City police officer in some of the most dangerous precincts in the city, I was ostensively [sic] terminated because I violated an NYPD regulation which prohibits officers from any association with a convicted felon.” The NYPD has characterized my friendship with Roger Stone in this way. New York Police Department captain Eric Adams consorted, by his own admission with both Mike Tyson and Louis Farrakhan both convicted felons and although there was an investigation he was not terminated or punished by the NYPD in any way.
” Under the law Eric Adams and I must be treated equally therefore [sic] I filed a $25 million lawsuit against the New York Police Department. This lawsuit will expose both the illegal seating of the administrative judge in my case as well as corruption by the internal affairs officers that conducted my case.
” The reason that the NYPD has treated me differently, in this case, is simply because of my support for President Donald Trump and my friendship with Roger Stone. In the course of this political persecution, my father sadly passed away. I was also subpoenaed by the January 6 committee which ran up legal fees and I could not afford a funeral for my father. The action taken against me has cost me my reputation, my job, and my life savings.
” Sal Greco is a man of action who says what he does and does what he says. This lawsuit will hopefully begin the cycle where political witch hunts and political persecutions are finally held accountable in a court of law. I look forward for the truth to be finally be revealed in court.”
