BEND, OR – Three people are confirmed dead, including the suspect, following a Sunday evening shooting at the Safeway in the Forum Shopping Center in northeast Bend.

Just after 7:00 pm on Sunday, several 911 calls were made to report shots were fired inside the grocery store. Witnesses told police that the suspect entered at the back end of the parking lot, first shooting towards Costco and Big Lots. The suspect moved to Safeway, entering through the west entrance, and shot one person in the entryway.

Police made entry into the store, purportedly believing they were encountering an active shooter situation, and located two other people with gunshot wounds, both of whom were declared deceased on the scene. One of those people are believed to be the suspect.

Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said “Police believe the shooter continued firing through the store, shooting and killing an additional person.”

The first victim was taken to the St. Charles Bend Medical Center, but later died from their injuries. Reportedly, a second victim from the incident was brought to the same hospital, and that person is reportedly in “good condition.”

Miller said that police recovered an “AR-15 assault-style weapon” from the scene, “in close proximity to the shooter.”

In a news conference, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said police were still hearing gunshots when they first entered the store. Witnesses reported to 911 seeing a man dressed in all black, and one said the man was carrying two duffle bags. One witness said there was a second shooter, but Krantz said there is “no evidence of a second shooter anywhere in the area.”

The chief said there were almost 100 officers on scene. He said police are aware of “information floating around social media” that may be postings from the shooter.

Further, although there were reports of other shootings in the city, such as in the area of Southeast Ninth Street and Reed Market Road, Krantz said there was “no evidence of other shootings in our community.”

The deceased suspect has not been identified at the time of this writing.

KTVT spoke with a man who was in the store with his four children when the shooter entered. Josh Caba said he went into the store alone with the children while his wife stayed in the car since she wasn’t feeling well. “About 10 minutes later,” he said, “we started heading to the front. Then we heard I don’t know how many shots out front – six or seven. I immediately turned to my children and said, ‘Run!’ People were screaming. … it was a horrifying experience.”

“By the grace and provision of God,” he said that he and three of his children rushed to the back exit, where his wife had driven around. He said she was “sitting in the car, saying ‘Get in the car! Get in the car!’” He went back in the store to find the fourth child and rushed her out to the car.

Caba praised police actions. He said, “When I got out of that store and the kids were rounded up, [police] are running into the store. They are wonderful people. They deserve all the praise and credit in the world. It is absolutely more terrifying than you can imagine to have someone shooting at your kids. They are rock stars!”
