CHICAGO, IL – It’s almost impossible to keep track of the violence and murders in the City of Chicago, and this past weekend was no different.

From Friday evening to Sunday evening, 26 people were reportedly shot, seven of which were fatal. On top of that, one of the victims who remains in critical condition after being shot is a five-year-old boy.

Devin McGregor was in the 7600 block of North Paulina Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood just after 6:00 pm with his dad, a 25-year-old man who has not yet been identified by police. A black Hyundai drove up to them and started shooting, striking five-year-old McGregor and his dad.

McGregor was shot in the head, and his dad was shot in the hand and shoulder.

The boy’s mother drove the two to St. Francis Hospital, and McGregor was moved to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life in critical condition.

There is no suspect identified at the time of this writing. McGregor is the 12th child to be shot in the city since last Monday.

Also taking over the city was what the Chicago Sun-Times is referring to as “street takeovers” with “stunt drivers and spectators,” but what are more commonly known, at least in Oakland, CA, as sideshows. This is where several vehicles (upwards of hundreds sometimes) circle around an intersection and drive in donuts and do other stupid tricks that get people injured and killed, while also upwards of hundreds of people watch, dance, yell, harass, and many times do drugs.

The sideshows took over the weekend evenings and included people from all across the country, reportedly. The police didn’t release full details on the incidents at the time of this writing, but they did say that officers “were assaulted with bricks and bottles.”

At one of the events located at the intersection of Cermak Road and Lumber Street on the Lower West Side, six police cars were damaged. No officers were reported injured there. Attendees were caught on video throwing objects and striking a moving police vehicle as it approached the crowd.

Reportedly these events have been spreading through the city, moving from intersections to “industrial parks, empty mall parking lots and even the downtown area.”

Friday night’s event at the far south side was advertised on social media as a “wild” event with “Chicago vs. Everybody.” Participants came in from Detroit, Michigan, and the Bay Area in California.

A 19-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning for driving “toward a police sergeant trying to stop him in the 500 block of South Clinton Street.” Two 18-year-old men were also arrested for reckless conduct.

Mayoral candidate Raymond Lopez said, “The moment we show there’s consequences, this nonsense will come to an end. Until then, expect it to continue.”
