According to a report from Fox News, the in-laws of California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom appear to be fans of Florida Republican Ron DeSantis despite Newsom’s vocalized disdain for DeSantis, as a family trust operated by Newsom’s wife’s parents made a sizeable donation to a PAC in support of Governor DeSantis.

While Republicans and Democrats will frequently spar over policy positions and the sort, every so often there comes a direct political rivalry between two candidates who aren’t actually running against each other – and that is the case with Governors Newsom and DeSantis.

Over the past few months, the California governor has been taking public shots at the widely popular Florida governor, with the first major attack launched by Newsom being an ad that ran over the Fourth of July (on Fox News, no less) that criticized some of Governor DeSantis’ policy prescriptions in the Sunshine State.

The Democratic governor has vowed “to make Ron DeSantis a one-term governor,” in recent statements, with the personal feud likely being emboldened by the fact that both Newsom and DeSantis are being viewed as potential presidential contenders for their respective political parties.

Even the mainstream media can’t help themselves from comparing the two governors from opposite ends of the country (and political spectrum), with The Atlantic referring to Newsom as “the Ron DeSantis of the Left.”

Earlier in August, Governor Newsom stepped up his efforts against Governor DeSantis even further, donating $100,000 to DeSantis’ gubernatorial opponent, Charlie Crist.

When Newsom was asked why he opted to donate to DeSantis’ opponent, he asserted that the Florida governor is a bully and that he doesn’t “like bullies,” referencing past comments DeSantis made poking fun at Dr. Anthony Fauci.

But in a bit of a twist, it appears that DeSantis has managed to reap some monetary support for his campaign by none other than Newsom’s extended family.

On April 6th, 2022, the Friends of Ron DeSantis PAC received a $5,000 contribution from a family trust operated by Kenneth F. Siebel Jr. and Judith A. Siebel – the parents of Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel.

Apparently, Newsom’s father-in-law Kenneth has a long history of monetarily supporting Republican candidates, according to Federal Election Commission filings, having made recent donations to Republican Senators Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley, and Ron Johnson.

Governor Newsom nor the Seibel family have made any public statements as of yet regarding the donation to the Friends of Ron DeSantis PAC, but if Newsom didn’t know about it in April, he undoubtedly knows about it now. Furthermore, Governor DeSantis’ office has not yet publicly addressed the donation, but one could conclude that the news likely conjured a smile on the rising star of the Republican party.

As for the myriad of attacks launched by the California governor, DeSantis brushed them off by likening Newsom’s handling of California as being the epitome of “terrible governance,” emphasizing that while one often sees a lot of California license plates in Florida, “if you go to California, you ain’t seeing very many Florida license plates.”
