Local reports note the incident occurred along the 7000 block of South Jeffery Boulevard at approximately 4:30 a.m., where a group of men were gathered in the middle of the street outside of Jeffrey Pub when the vehicle came speeding through.

According to a report from ABC 7, the victims killed were engaged in some kind of a fracas amongst themselves, with witnesses saying it “began as a fight inside of a bar overnight and continued outside.”

The Cook County medical examiner has identified two of the three deceased victims as 27-year-old Devonta K. Vivetter and 25-year-old Donald Huey.

The establishment where the incident occurred outside of, Jeffery Pub, issued a statement following the tragedy, stating, “A very unfortunate tragic event occurred early this morning after closing. A small group of people were in the street and an unidentified vehicle drove past at a very high rate of speed injuring several people and some deceased. Our hearts heavy this morning that such tragic event has occurred. And to those that lost a loved one or friend we stand with you.”

Chicago Police are reportedly actively searching for the individual who was behind the wheel of the silver sedan. A motive behind the incident has not been shared by authorities, but a police report regarding the matter did read that the footage from the incident “appeared to show that the driver hit the pedestrians intentionally.”

The cousin of victim Vivetter, identified only as Anita in local reports, had apparently witnessed the lead-up to the hit-and run, telling ABC 7, “Someone jumped in they car and ran them over. Saw that they were fighting, jumped in the car and ran them over.”

Anita added, “He didn’t deserve it. And for you to keep going like…this is ridiculous.”

Additional witnesses also shared similar accounts, with one unnamed witness saying, “It’s no way you couldn’t have seen the folks in the middle of the street. And for you to keep going like that, this is ridiculous…You could just hear down the street: boom, boom, other people were getting hit. I was just focused on who I was in front of, the victim. The victim that was in front of me. I was just focused on him.”

The fourth surviving victim was last stated as being in serious but stable condition, having suffered lacerations to his legs.
