MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – Locals of Mexico City have become increasingly irritated with the amount of Americans, specifically from California, flocking to their area, according to reports.

A recent LA Times report mentioned several locals who have expressed frustration with the many Americans who are driving up rents and making English speaking more prominent in their area.

Flyers have gone up in Mexico’s capital city which take quite a different stance to America’s acceptance of Mexicans fleeing to the United States, whether or not they arrive legally. The flyers read in English, “New to the city? Working remotely? You’re a fucking plague and the locals fucking hate you. Leave.”

The residents are starting to become “fed up” with the so called “new-wave imperialism” that are causing businesses in the area to change to adapt to the growing number of Americans in the area. Taquerias have become coffee shops and Pilates studios, for example.

Visitors are only allowed to stay in Mexico for six months before they’re required to get a visa, which many are doing as remote working becomes more popular, taking advantage of the cheaper rent available as well as the scenic and serene locations.

The Times spoke with writer and professor Fernando Bustos Gorozpe, who said, “We’re the only people speaking Spanish except the waiters.” He said that in restaurants, one must make a request for a menu in Spanish rather than having to request on in English.

“[Mexico] stinks of modern colonialism” Gorozpe said in a TikTok video. “Mexico is classist and racist,” Bustos added. “People with white skin are given preference. Now, if a local wants to go to a restaurant or a club, they don’t just have to compete with rich, white Mexicans but with foreigners too.”

Apparently, white people can’t do anything right no matter where they go.

According to the US State Department, there are currently 1.6 million Americans in Mexico, although it’s not known how many of those are in Mexico City. Americans started flocking south of the border during the height of the Covid pandemic when Mexico eased restrictions sooner than many states in the US, specifically California. Despite the negative comments and flyers by some, the LA Times said that the “vast majority” of Mexico City locals are “unwaveringly kind” to the visitors.

Alexandra Demou runs Welcome Home Mexico, a relocation company. She said that she receives about 50 calls per week from people considering the move to Mexico City. “We’re just seeing Americans flooding in,” she said. “It’s people who maybe have their own business, or maybe they’re thinking of starting some consulting or freelance work. They don’t even know how long they’re going to stay. They’re completely picking up their entire lives and just moving down here.”

Ironically, there are hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants flooding into the US at the borders from Mexico who are attempting to escape cartels, human trafficking, and poor living conditions, causing a major strain on American resources.

In May of this year, the Times also reported on a similar situation taking place in Portugal, where Americans living has risen by 45%, causing a rise housing costs there too. The article was titled, “Welcome to Portugal, the new expat haven. Californians, please go home.”

It should be noted that when Americans make similar comments regarding illegal immigrants, they’re labeled as racist and xenophobic.
