With Pride month underway, numerous states around the country have hosted events and parades surrounding the LGBTQ community. At the same time, these events have come under criticism for being open to children of all ages. While welcoming children, several new outlets have reported how many of the festivals include subject material not suitable for kids. Apparently, that didn’t matter much to the White House as Vice President Kamala Harris didn’t just attend a Pride Festival in D.C., she also gave a speech.

Speaking at the event, Harris was sure to not only praise the LGBTQ community but also target the GOP.  “No one should fear loving who they love. Our children in Texas and Florida should not fear who they are.” The Vice President added, “We should not have to be dealing with 300 laws in states around our country that are attacking our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters. So we know what we stand for, and therefore we know what we will fight for.”

On top of Harris giving a speech, there was apparently a family friendly zone at the festival that included a story hour for children hosted by drag queens. One attendee praised the efforts to teach children about the community. “It is a great thing because, I feel like, making sure that children are aware of what is around them is important. Just because you are around certain things doesn’t mean that you’re going to be persuaded to be a part of things, but you should be aware of the other type of people live are around you. And if you’re not capable it’s a developmental problem and this is how we fix that problem.”

A woman, who used the pronouns he/him added how they started to question themselves at a young age and still question today. “It was around 10 that I started questioning if I was bi. Since then it was a slippery slope – am I bi, omni, lesbian? Now recently I’m like, am I pan? Now I’m starting to realize I’m queer.”

While celebrating the month, both Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and Governor Greg Abbott have focused on protecting children from such material. DeSantis passed the Parental Rights in Education law while Abbott called for protective services to investigate potential sex change operations in minors as potential child abuse.
