We live in a republic. That republic has a political system based on representative democracy. In such, as opposed to direct democracy, decisions on issues are taken by those we elect to office. Sorry for being Captain Obvious.

I lay this base of fire to illustrate the main reason the left and Democrats are livid about the Supreme Court overturning Roe. It has nothing to do with women. The left treats women, as it does other groups, with coarse theatrics to provoke them and then they use the subsequent irrationality to political ends.

It has nothing to do with alleged rights, as abortion will probably still be available in most American states and right across the border of pro-life states. No doubt left wing Uber and a woke hotel chain will provide free transportation and lodging to women seeking abortions in other states.

It has nothing to do with personal control of a person’s body, as the left-wing and Democrats were quite enthusiastic to control bodies during Covid.

It has everything to do with the difference between judicial fiat and representative democracy. The left loved Roe because it gave liberal lawyers the opportunity to bypass the ballot box and rule by decree. As authoritarians, that is their preferred method of government. Why should pesky voters get in the way of those who know best, right?

But with this overthrow of a legally irrational law the decision returns to the states and thus to state legislators who are directly elected by voters. Well, the left isn’t happy about that. The same groups that touted the democratic process in the 2020 presidential election and clutch their pearls over the supposed threat to democracy that was posed by the J6 riot (a J5 riot would have been much more entertaining), now disdain the exercise of the franchise as a dangerous development in the history of America.

In this tantrum they show their true colors and any and all protestations by them should be ignored as the frothing of a losing team. In fact, as conservatives, the madder the left gets the more it should confirm to us that we’re on the right track. However, the Roe kerfuffle brings up a greater question that I have posed before in this publication and others.

Notice the vehemence of the left on this. Hear their cries about burning down the Supreme Court. Listen to them threaten the lives of Supreme Court justices and glare at how they took the Arizona Senate hostage. Are these people capable of engaging in rational discourse? Do they have any concept of freedom or liberty under law? Have they any loyalty to the Constitution?

Thus, doesn’t this speak to a basic disconnect between the rational and irrational in American politics? Are we actually one country anymore or are we ideologically warring tribes with little in common except geography? As such, shouldn’t there be a reform of the American polity in both system and geography that recognizes these unbridgable differences? This is a realization that may not come easily. Nevertheless, it is a question that must be faced.
