While the backlash from the Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade continues, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided to use her position in D.C. to send a letter to her Democratic colleagues. In the letter, not only did the Democrat criticize the Supreme Court, labeling them “extremist”, but she also vowed to continue to fight for the right to have an abortion by supporting bills like the Women’s Health Protection Act before the upcoming 2022 Midterm elections. If passed, the bill would make abortion a federal right.

That wasn’t all as the House Speaker suggested that the Supreme Court was trying to “punish and control the American people”, adding, “Democrats must continue our fight to expand freedom in America. Doing so is foundational to our oath of office and our fidelity to the Constitution.”

Following the backlash aimed at Justice Clarence Thomas, who was only one of six who voted to overturn the ruling, Pelosi stated, “Justice Clarence Thomas confirmed many of our deepest fears about where this decision may lead: taking aim at additional long-standing precedent and cherished privacy rights, from access to contraception and in-vitro fertilization to marriage equality. Legislation is being introduced to further codify freedoms which Americans currently enjoy. More information to follow.”

It should be noted that Thomas’ opinions were not shared by all his colleagues like Justice Samuel Alito, who commented, “And to ensure that our decision is not misunderstood or mischaracterized, we emphasize that our decision concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right. Nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion.”

And in true Democratic fashion, Pelosi was sure to place all the blame not on the Biden administration, who has been in the White House for 18 months, but on former President Donald Trump. “It is clear from how Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell stacked the Supreme Court that elections have ramifications. It is essential that we protect and expand our pro-choice Majorities in the House and Senate in November so that we can eliminate the filibuster so that we can restore women’s fundamental rights – and freedom for every American.”
