Joe Biden recently appeared on the late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, where the president asserted that Republicans are somehow playing dirty politics. At the same time, he and the Democrats are the political party engaged in a more moral approach. During the exchange with the late-night host, Biden also cracked a joke about how Republicans should be sent to jail.

Biden raised an example of what seems to be a question he and other Democrats are faced with by their constituents, telling Kimmel, “‘Look, the Republicans don’t play it square, why do you play it square?’ Well, guess what? If we do the same thing they do, our democracy would literally be in jeopardy. It’s not a joke.”

Kimmel responded, likening the framed hypothetical from Biden as akin to playing a game of Monopoly with someone who isn’t adhering to the rules, saying, “I understand that argument, but also, it’s like you’re playing Monopoly with somebody who, you know, won’t pass go and won’t follow any of the rules, and how do you ever make any progress if they’re not following the rules?”

The president quickly responded with what he thought was a clever quip, saying that if Republicans don’t want to follow the rules, then they should be put in jail.

“Well, you’ve got to send them to jail, uh, you know. They’ve got a little box in there.”

Aside from the Biden interview rendering politically tasteless remarks about Republicans, the president also showcased his series of signature gaffes – going on a sort of incoherent rant about what seems to be the current state of journalism.

Biden started off with a tidbit that didn’t seem to make any sense at first, telling the late-night host, “So, there’s a lot of major things we’ve done, but what we haven’t done is we haven’t been able to communicate in a way that it, uh, um…[unintelligible].”

Kimmel seemingly delivered a smile-and-nod approach, agreeing with whatever Biden was saying at the moment and responding with, “Well, see, that’s kind of perfect. We haven’t been able to communicate it…”

At this point, Biden seemed to be latching onto something about the current state of the press but failed to really drive home any particular position.

“Look how the press has changed. Look how the press has changed. I know you get it. You over-stand it. You don’t just understand it. You over-stand it. But here’s the deal, one of the things is that it’s very difficult now to have a…um…even with notable exceptions, even the really good reporters, they have to get a number of clicks on the nightly news. So instead of asking a question – anyway, just everything gets sensationalized in ways that – but I’m convinced we can get through this. We have to get through it. And one of the things, look…”

After Biden struggled to articulate any complete point or thought, Kimmel interjected with, “I’m going to take a break, and then we’ll talk a little bit more if you don’t mind.”
