DETROIT, MI – Authorities released a video of an incident that occurred on June 19th at a Detroit gas station, where a father holding his infant fended off an armed assailant who entered the establishment and pointed a gun at him and his child.

The incident occurred at a gas station located near the intersection of Hubbell and Tireman Avenue at approximately 5:50 p.m. on June 19th. Surveillance video from the incident shows the suspect, an older black male adorned in a white tank top and tan bucket hat, approaching the gas station convenience store on foot.

The suspect appears to use the bottom of his shirt to open the door of the establishment, producing a handgun and loading in a magazine while a patron was exiting the store while holding his infant. The gunman immediately points the weapon at the victim, with the father pushing the weapon away from him and his child.

Video then shows the gunman stumbling backward out of the gas station, while the father remained inside with his child. Authorities suspect that when the father smacked the suspect’s firearm, it may have caused the weapon to jam.

While police did not share details on whether the suspect and the victim were previously familiar with each other prior to the incident, police did say the suspect followed the victim to the store following some kind of verbal argument that transpired earlier.

Detroit Police initially sought the public’s assistance in identifying the armed assailant featured in the security footage, but provided an update on June 20th noting that the suspect has since been taken into custody.

Authorities have yet to reveal the name of the suspect in custody, nor the name of the victim. Investigators are currently treating the case as an aggravated assault, but have not afforded any possible motive in the attack. Detroit Police’s 2nd Precinct are still actively investigating the incident.

Meanwhile in New York City, the Father’s Day weekend was marred with violence following a shooting the took place in Harlem that left one person dead and eight others injured.
