Donald Trump has fired back through a spokesperson at Mike Pence after the former Vice President said that he may run against him in 2024.

Trump spokesperson Taylor Budowich told The New York Times that Pence was “set to lose a governor’s race in 2016 before he was plucked up and his political career was salvaged.”

“Now, desperate to chase his lost relevance, Pence is parachuting into races, hoping someone is paying attention,” he added. “The reality is, President Trump is already 82-3 with his endorsements, and there’s nothing stopping him from saving America in 2022 and beyond.”

When asked by The Times if he would be open to running against Trump, Pence said, “We’ll go where we’re called.”

“That’s the way Karen and I have always approached these things,” he added, referring to his wife, Karen Pence.

Trump himself said earlier this month that “it would be a hard one” for Pence if he chose to run for president in 2024.

“I understand where the base is. I love the base. The base loves me,” Trump said, according to The Hill. “I think it would be hard, but Mike was a good guy. I thought he was a very good vice president. He was my friend.”

Trump told The Washington Examiner back in March that Pence will not be his running mate if he enters the 2024 race.

“I don’t think the people would accept it,” Trump said at the time. He’s also admitted that he hasn’t spoken to Pence in months.

“I haven’t spoken to him in a long time, and he’s a nice man,” Trump said earlier this month, according to Daily Mail. “He disappointed me on one thing because I think he should have sent the votes back to the legislatures.”

Pence has said that he’s proud of not cooperating with Trump in trying to overturn the 2020 election.

“I have been very moved traveling around the country how much people have made a point to express appreciation, it has been very humbling to me,” Pence claimed in one recent interview.

“President Trump is wrong. I had no right to overturn the election,” Pence added back in February, according to Newsweek. “The presidency belongs to the American people, and the American people alone. Frankly there is almost no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president.”

Trump has yet to reveal whether or not he will be running for president again in 2024, indicating that he will be announcing his decision after the midterm elections.
