KYIV, UKRAINE – The US Department of State has ordered the evacuation of all non-essential staff, as well as families of embassy employees from the Ukraine beginning Monday, according to reports.
This comes as tensions increase in the area with Russia, as Russian advanced fighter jets have arrived in Belarus, just north of the Ukraine.
Department officials have said that they also expect to encourage American citizens to leave the Ukraine via commercial aircraft “while those are still available.”
Officials have said that they will be moving “a ton” of “lethal aid” into Ukraine, and the US Embassy Kyiv posted on Twitter that approximately 200,000 pounds worth of weapons and ammunition, have already arrived. It’s apparently mostly made of “small arms ammunition.”
“Javelin anti-tank missiles are expected to arrive early next week from the Baltic states and from U.S. military stockpiles,” Fox News reported.
The US has committed to “helping Ukraine bolster its defenses in the face of growing Russian aggression,” which the weaponry demonstrates, according to the Embassy. Biden has said that he expects President Vladimir Putin to “move in” to invade Ukraine, saying, “My guess is he will move in. He has to do something.”
Approximately 100,000 Russian troops are along the Ukraine border. The United Kingdom has remarked that, should Russia attempt “destabilizing action” in Ukraine, they would be “punished” with a “package of sweeping measures.”
“We see these combat-ready troop formations,” said chair of the UK’s commons defense committee, Tobias Ellwood. “He has actually boxed himself into a corner because so much effort has been put into this,” Ellwood added. “He also recognizes that he will never again be as strong as this to take advantage of the west’s weakness. I suspect that an invasion is now imminent.”
