Canadian truck drivers blocked the highway near the U.S.- Manitoba International border to protest the jab mandate that bans all truck drivers getting the jab to cross the Canadian border. The protest occurred on Manitoba Highway 75, connecting to Pembina, North Dakota.

Multiple videos show dozens of trucks blocking traffic both southbound and northbound with signs such as “Trudeau Has Caused Hate, Division & Anger” and “Mandate Freedom.” Truck Drivers could also be seen waving American flags.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Manitoba put out a tweet about the demonstration and the impact it was having on traffic.

“Both northbound and southbound lanes are affected. Please drive with caution if you are in the area and expect delays.” – tweet from RCMP Manitoba. 

Under the new jab mandate rules from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, truck drivers who are not fully jabbed will not be allowed to enter Canada. They will be required to follow quarantine guidelines and undergo Covid19 testing. On January 22, new jab guidelines go into effect for truck drivers trying to enter the United States. The guidelines will ban any unjabbed truck driver from entering the country.

NNY 360 reported: “Only 50% to 60% of U.S. truckers are vaccinated, according to an estimate from the American Trucking Associations. The rules will make thousands of drivers ineligible for cross-border shipments, exacerbating a shortage at a time when the transportation industry is already strained.

“Manufacturers are warning they may be forced to slow production and will likely face higher costs from the snarling of a supply chain that depends on an open border for the movement of some $45 billion worth of goods every month. Canada is the top export market for 32 U.S. states, according to the Department of Commerce.”

Canada’s health minister Jean-Yves Duclos defended the mandate as the “right thing to do.” However, the jab mandate will significantly impact an already struggling supply chain where customers are facing empty shelves. Now customers can expect the shelves to emptier and take even longer to restock.

Duclos said, “That has been known for many months, and truckers in very large numbers have chosen to be vaccinated. That’s the right thing to do, not only to protect themselves, obviously but also to protect their businesses and the industry.”
