In an update to our previous reporting, a BOLO alert (be on the lookout) was issued for the parents of the alleged Oxford High School shooter after they reportedly turned up missing. Red Voice Media previously reported that the parents of the accused Oxford High School shooter had charges of involuntary manslaughter announced against them.

The four counts each of involuntary manslaughter against James and Jennifer Crumbley were announced on December 3rd in connection with the fatal shooting allegedly carried out by their 15-year-old son, Ethan, on November 30th.

Shortly after the charges were announced against the parents of the teen, a statewide BOLO was issued for the two after they were found not to be in the area. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard detailed the resources that were searching for the two.

“We have our Fugitive Apprehension Team, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service and others actively looking for them and have every expectation we’ll have them in custody soon,” the Sheriff said. “The action of fleeing and ignoring their attorney certainly adds weight to the charges. They cannot run from their part in this tragedy.”

However, according to attorneys Shannon Smith and Mariell Lehman – who are representing the Crumbleys – the two are not on the run from law enforcement.

“The Crumbleys left town on the night of the tragic shooting for their own safety,” the attorneys said in a statement. “They are returning to the area to be arraigned. They are not fleeing from law enforcement despite recent comments in media reports.”

Instead, in the statement provided by the attorneys, the issuance of the BOLO was not only premature, but a manifestation of misunderstandings and miscommunications.

“Instead of communicating with us,” the statement continued, “the prosecutor held a press conference to announce charges.”

Apparently, James and Jennifer Crumbley were not under official surveillance on during the onset of the investigation, according to Sheriff Bouchard, as it was unclear whether or not the two would face any charges related to the school shooting.

As mentioned in the statement by the attorneys for the two, they’d already left town on the night of November 30th out of an abundance of caution.

These circumstances, in conjunction with the prosecutor announcing their charges on television rather than directly communicating with their attorneys seemingly resulted in the issuance of the BOLO.
