In a battle of wits between himself and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump comes to the fight unarmed. Trump is a great populist rabble rouser and had a successful administration. But his time has come and gone. He’s yesterday’s fish, rotting more as days pass.

McConnell is the most powerful Republican in the country and is directly responsible for stopping the Biden agenda on such issues as federal control of elections and the Biden socialist budget. Trump doesn’t care about that. He just resents not having the sole limelight.

FNC: “As the GOP works to recapture the Senate majority in next year’s midterm elections, longtime Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is making it crystal clear what he thinks of former President Trump’s relitigating of his 2020 election loss to President Biden.

Republicans need a net gain of just one seat in next year’s midterms to regain the majority they lost in January, when they were swept by the Democrats in the twin Georgia runoff elections. And the GOP sees a conducive political climate, with President Biden’s approval ratings underwater in the wake of criticism of his handling of the turbulent U.S. exit from Afghanistan, the sudden rise in COVID-19 cases this summer, the latest surge of migrants trying to cross into the U.S. along the southern border with Mexico, and the rise in inflation.”

“I do think we need to be thinking about the future and not the past,” McConnell told the press on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. “I think the American people are focusing on this administration, what it’s doing to the country, and it’s my hope the ’22 election will be a referendum on the performance of the current administration, not a rehash of suggestions about what may have happened in 2020,” he said. Excellent counsel. But as usual, Trump is still obsessed with his lost cause and judges everyone and everything by that.

“Mitch McConnell should have challenged that election because even back then, we had plenty of material to challenge that election. He should have challenged the election,” Trump recently and loonily insisted. And for a further stab at the most effective person in his own party? “The Republican Senate needs new leadership…Mitch is not the guy, not the right guy, he’s not doing the job,” Trump said.

His next statement is plainly counterfactual. “He gave [Sen. Charles Schumer of New York and his Democrats on the budget] a lifeline – it’s more than a lifeline, he gave them so much time to figure out what to do because they were in a big bind; they were unable to do anything…He had the weapon and he was able to use it. It’s a shame,” the Palm Beach Republican continued. “That’s not a good thing that happened today. He made a big mistake.” Trump makes a bigger mistake. He fails to realize the world no longer revolves around him.
