With Governor Gavin Newsom’s recall election just a few days away, the Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have been working around the clock to secure the state. But while they are scrambling, Republican candidate and frontrunner against Newsom, Larry Elder, is already making statements about some of the first actions he will take as Governor if Newsom is, in fact, recalled. On his agenda – banning Critical Race Theory.

Sitting down with Fox News on Wednesday, Elder expressed the importance of banning CRT from being taught in schools. “My preference is for local school boards to decide what the curriculum is, but I think this is so bad and so insulting that I would look into some legislation like that.” He also added that he wanted to leave it up to the parents to decide where their children go to learn, leaving “an option where they can send their kids to a school that teaches this kind of nonsense and gives them an option to put their kid in another school that doesn’t teach that. That’s my preference.”

While there are a lot of theories surrounding CRT, according to the California School Board Association, critical race theory is the “practice of interrogating race and racism in society and the ways in which it impacts people. It emphasizes race as a social construct with social significance and acknowledges that racism is embedded within systems and institutions that replicate racial inequality — codified in law, embedded in structures, and woven into public policy.”

Being an African-Amerian himself, Elder rejects what the state characterizes as CRT, saying “I submit to you that systemic racism is not the problem and critical race theory and reparations are not the answer.”

Although Elder is already making plans for his time as Governor, it should be noted that a recent survey showed that 52% of likely voters in California said Newsom didn’t deserve to be recalled. Only 44.4% of the voters said it was time for Newsom to be recalled. There were still around 4% that were undecided.

The recall election is set for Tuesday, September 14th.
