Nassau County has been on high alert since Friday when a deputy was shot multiple times during a routine traffic stop. With the deputy in critical condition and not expected to survive, the Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper gave a stern suggestion to citizens as police are still searching for the suspect, 35-year-old Patrick Rene McDowell. Speaking to the press, Leeper advised citizens to “blow him out the door cause he’s like a rabid animal.”

According to body camera footage, Deputy Josh Moyers, 29, was performing a routine traffic stop when he approached a Chrysler minivan. The driver, McDowell, who was in the United States Marine Corps from 2005 to 2009, accompanied a female in the passenger seat. After Moyers was given a false name and McDowell couldn’t produce a driver’s license, the driver was asked to exit the vehicle. That is when McDowell opened fire on the deputy, hitting him in the face. McDowell didn’t stop there as he continued to fire on the deputy even after Moyers was unresponsive.

McDowell and the female fled the scene and ditched the van in the nearby woods. While McDowell remains wanted, the female didn’t leave the van and, according to police, is cooperating.

As for the Moyers, Leeper gave an update on Saturday, saying, “Unfortunately, Deputy Moyers is not going to survive. Where the bullets lodged, what it did, there’s just nothing they can do, unfortunately. … We now have a murderer on the loose in our community. This guy is dangerous. If you’re in a home and he breaks into your home, and you have a gun, blow him out the door cause he’s like a rabid animal. He will kill you with his mindset. What he did to that deputy was uncalled for, unnecessary, and he needs to pay for it.” Leeper assured citizens, “We’re going to find him eventually.”

And it isn’t just the police department; as The Florida Time-Union reported, “Up to $50,000 in rewards are being offered by donors including the Fraternal Order of Police, Florida Sheriff’s Association, the Florida Deputy Association and Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest of McDowell.”
