In the U.K. Tom Tugendhat, a conservative member of Parliament who chairs the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and served in Afghanistan slammed Biden, saying, “To see [Biden] call into question the courage of men I fought with, to claim that they ran, is shameful. Those who have never fought for the colors they fly should be careful about criticizing those who have.”

U.K. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said that due to the Taliban’s rout of Afghan forces, “some people will not get back.” He also said last week that Al Qaeda is likely to return and pose a dire threat to Western countries. Wallace appeared to lose his composure in an interview earlier this week, saying “it’s sad that the West has done what it’s done.”

Meanwhile, former U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May had harsh words. “What does it say about NATO if we are entirely dependent on a unilateral decision taken by the United States?” she asked British lawmakers Wednesday. “Was our understanding of the Afghan government so weak? Was our knowledge of the position on the ground so inadequate? Did we really believe this, or did we just feel we had to follow the United States and hope that on a wing and a prayer it would be alright on the night?” Hard but justified words from an ally.
