The U.S. Justice Department has announced that it will have a new position: Chief Diversity Officer.

This development was reported by Fox News on Saturday.

‘The New Chief Diversity Officer Will… Serve As A Channel For Department-Wide Accountability’

In addition to and along with the Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Human Resources and Administration, the DOJ’s Chief Diversity Officer will “lead and coordinate the Department’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” in the agency.

The salary of the newly created job will reportedly be between $144,128 to $172,500 per year.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order in June to promote diversity and equality within the federal government.

The White House statement read, “Even with decades of progress building a Federal workforce that looks like America, the enduring legacies of employment discrimination, systemic racism, and gender inequality are still felt today.”

“Too many underserved communities remain under-represented in the Federal workforce, especially in positions of leadership,” the statement continued.

“This Executive Order establishes an ambitious, whole-of-government initiative that will take a systematic approach to embedding DEIA in Federal hiring and employment practices,” it added. “When public servants reflect the communities they serve, the government is more effective and successful.”

Fox News noted, “The new Chief Diversity Officer will work to not only ensure DEIA ‘remains a priority’ in the DOJ, but serve as a channel for department-wide accountability.”

Biden Vowed To Make His Administration ‘Look Like America’

“President Biden campaigned on creating the most diverse cabinet in history in an attempt to fix racial disparities in the U.S,” Fox News reported. “Following his successful election said he would appoint people to his administration that ‘look like America.”

The executive order in June required federal departments to examine whether members of “underserved communities face barriers” within their respective agencies.

The hiring of “chief diversity officers” has been a recent phenomenon, with companies and groups like the American Psychological Association, PagerDuty, and the FBI all tweeting about such officers in their respective companies in the last week.

The organization Marketer and Customer notes last week that “The Chief Diversity Officer is a relatively new position among organizations, but one that is increasingly vital as companies understand the benefits of having a diverse workforce.”

The job description for chief diversity officer at Portland Community College states that the position “leads the development and implementation of proactive diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in support of the College’s strategic plan to create a learning and working environment where all have an opportunity to succeed.”
