The Pentagon has confirmed a suicide bomber has detonated outside the Kabul airport near the Abbey Gate, where thousands upon thousands of Afghans had gathered, desperately trying to make their way into the airport and out of harms way.

The threat had been reported as highly likely this week as more and more Afghans and Americans gathered outside the airport, and the situation continues to deteriorate.

Just yesterday, the State Department told Americans to again shelter in place and not come to the airport given the dangers involved.

A second explosion has now been reported, and at least three U.S. soldiers were injured. Early reports also indicate unquantified Afghan casualties.  We will provide additional information as it becomes available.
