Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) said he would appeal a ruling by a federal appeals court on Saturday that upheld CDC COVID-19 restrictions for cruise ships, and if necessary, he would take the case all the way to the Supreme Court.

During a news conference on Monday he stated, “We are absolutely going to pursue to get the stay removed, either at the full 11th Circuit or at the U.S. Supreme Court.”

He added, “I’m confident that we’d win on the merits, at the full 11th Circuit and, honestly, I’m confident we’d win at the US Supreme Court.”

Trying To Resume Normal Operations

Because the cruise line industry is a billion dollar one in the Sunshine State, DeSantis’ main goal was to get things up and running again after the pandemic as soon as possible.

The CDC issued a “no-sail” order for all cruise lines in March of 2020, and in April, DeSantis filed suit.

The popular Florida governor isn’t just fighting the federal government, either.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is suing the surgeon general of Florida over DeSantis’ executive order that prohibits vaccine passports.

The cruise company called the state law an “anomalous, misguided intrusion.”

Their company’s rules require all passengers and crew to show proof of vaccination status.

Segregated Cruises?

Some cruise lines have had enough of the Florida law, and have devised ways of getting around it. But if you are someone who has chosen not to get vaccinated, at least on a cruise ship, you might be treated a bit differently.

According to a report from Yahoo News, Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines will require unvaccinated passengers to pay for travel insurance, their own COVID testing, and actually be banned from certain areas of the ship.

On both Carnival and Royal Caribbean, the unvaccinated will have to pay an additional $136 to $178.

Unvaccinated Carnival passengers who cannot show proof of vaccination will not be allowed on the ship and will not receive a refund. There is also additional payment for testing and insurance.

But it doesn’t stop there. Unvaccinated Carnival passengers will be prohibited from using the sauna or the thermal suite, and unvaccinated children will not be allowed to partake in cruise activities.

Royal Caribbean lists their restrictions for unvaccinated passengers on its website, but the casinos, certain restaurants, bars, lounges, activities, and shows are largely for vaccinated passengers only.
