On Wednesday night, President Joe Biden reiterated his call to ban so-called “assault weapons,” and bragged about his work passing the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban while serving as a Senator.

Biden made his comments during a CNN town hall.

Biden Brags About 1994 Assault Weapons Ban

During the town hall, Biden was asked what the federal government can do to ‘address’ gun violence.

“I’m the only guy that ever got — passed legislation when I was a senator to make sure we eliminated assault weapons,” Biden said.

The president told the town hall, “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a, whether it’s a 9mm pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous.”

Biden appeared to be referring to different sizes of magazines – since any firearm ‘can’ shoot hundreds of rounds.

“I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things, but I’m not likely to get that done in the near term,” Biden added.

In April, the Biden-Harris administration announced it would be pushing for more firearm restrictions and other measures related to gun violence, through executive order if necessary.

A White House statement read, “President Biden is reiterating his call for Congress to pass legislation to reduce gun violence.”

“Last month, a bipartisan coalition in the House passed two bills to close loopholes in the gun background check system,” the statement read. “Congress should close those loopholes and go further, including by closing ‘boyfriend’ and stalking loopholes that currently allow people found by the courts to be abusers to possess firearms, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, repealing gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability, and investing in evidence-based community violence interventions.”

Biden: ‘This Administration Will Not Wait For Congress To Act To Take Its Own Steps’

“Congress should also pass an appropriate national ‘red flag’ law, as well as legislation incentivizing states to pass ‘red flag’ laws of their own.” the statement added.

So-called “red flag” laws allow law enforcement to seize firearms from individuals without full due process of the law – people who are not convicted of any crime can have their firearms taken away.

The administration declared, “But this Administration will not wait for Congress to act to take its own steps – fully within the Administration’s authority and the Second Amendment – to save lives.”
