Former President Donald Trump is getting the last laugh today on those who banned him from social media platforms like Twitter. In a move long expected and predicted by this publication months ago as his best current option, the last chief executive launched his own social media platform on Tuesday.

Interestingly, it’s a one way street. Trump acolytes will get the word from on high, talk and post amongst themselves, but will not be able to directly reply to or take part in posts by Trump. That should fit in quite well with their sense of intellectual curiosity and it also maintains strict message discipline.

Inevitably Trump will move the news cycle with his posts and will use the platform to pour scorn on his enemies, pick fights for distraction purposes, communicate his agenda, and tease about a 2024 run, which many in the DC Republican establishment are now saying he is going to make.

FNC: “Former President Trump launched a communications platform on Tuesday, which will serve as ‘a place to speak freely and safely,’ and will eventually give him the ability to communicate directly with his followers, after months of being banned from sites like Twitter and Facebook. The platform is ‘From the Desk of Donald J. Trump’. The space allows Trump to post comments, images, and videos.

“The space allows Trump to post, and allows followers to share the former president’s posts to Twitter and Facebook. However, the new platform does not have a feature to allow users to ‘reply’ or engage with Trump’s posts.”

“This is just a one-way communication,” one source familiar with the site told press. “This system allows Trump to communicate with his followers.”

In typically humble terms, the former president introduced his new communications vehicle. “In a time of silence and lies. A beacon of freedom arises. A place to speak freely and safely…Straight from the desk of Donald J. Trump.” There is an associated video that has all the subtlety of a cerebral hemorrhage. A second video introduction, scrapped due to the understated message and retro feel, is displayed in the clip below.

“President Trump’s website is a great resource to find his latest statements and highlights from his first term in office, but this is not a new social media platform,” senior advisor Jason Miller told media. “We’ll have additional information coming on that front in the very near future.” Miller lowered expectations by playing semantics. Smart.

The now unfettered Trump can use this new tool for good or ill. If he let’s his id run amok and pulls a Colonel Kurtz this will become a running joke and will provide much ammo to his foes. Alternately, if he picks his fights, keeps his immaturity in check, and stays professional-not personal, this could be an effective tool in his expected 2024 run for his former office.
