During Wednesday morning’s episode of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski’s obsession with Donald Trump continued when they claimed that the former president had taken the Republican Party “hostage,” and that Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is trying to rescue it.

Brzezinski accused Trump of taking the GOP “hostage” as she reacted to a Wall Street Journal op-ed entitled, “Purging Liz Cheney.”

“Joe, it just goes back to our lead story, and how serious it is — what this judge has said about the Trump presidency, about the Mueller report that the president with the help of the attorney general used the Mueller report to drum up hate, to foment anger, and it all led up to January 6, and by the way, took the Republican Party hostage, and they are choosing to stay there,” she said.

Scarborough then chimed in to attack Republicans, saying, “they’re continuing to lie about the 2020 election when everybody knows they’re lying about the 2020 election.”

After touting what he described as Cheney’s conservative voting record, Scarborough added, “This is madness.”

Former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele spoke out to agree with Brzezinski, saying that Republicans don’t want Cheney to rescue the party because they like where they are.

“It’s not like she was this outlier,” Steele said, referring to Cheney. “But, Mika has given us the right image here. Liz Cheney is the rescuer. She’s come, and she’s found the hostages.”

“And she’s saying, ‘Come on. Follow me out of the building. Come on. I’ve got a way,'” he added. “And they’re sitting there going, ‘No, no, no, we want to stay. We like it here. In fact — bad rescuer. Bad person trying to save us from ourselves.’ That’s where we are.”

Calls have grown to remove Cheney from her leadership positions ever since she voted to impeach Trump earlier this year. She recently said that “it’s important” that Trump not run again in 2024.

“I don’t think that that’s going to happen,” Cheney told the Washington Examiner. “And I think it’s important that it not happen, given what he did.”
