On Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell avoided questions about anti-Trump Rep. Liz Cheney getting kicked out of her leadership position as House GOP Conference chair.

When McConnell was asked on whether or not he planned to support Cheney keeping her leadership position, the Senate Minority Leader dodged.

McConnell: 100% Focused On Biden Admin

McConnell instead said that he was devoting all of his attention to the agenda of the Biden administration.

“I think the best way to look at what this new administration is – the president may have won the nomination, but Bernie Sanders won the argument about what the new administration should be like,” McConnell said.

McConnell added, “We’re confronted with severe challenges from a new administration and a narrow majority of Democrats in the House and a 50-50 Senate to turn America into a socialist country, and that’s 100% of my focus.”

Cheney’s leadership position has become a point of controversy in recent months as she continued battle Trump publicly over her belief that he helped instigate the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6 by claiming the election was fraudulent.

A reporter asked McConnell if he believed most Republicans also believed the 2020 election was fraudulent.

McConnell replied, “100% of my focus is on standing up to this administration.”

“What we have in the United States Senate is total unity from Susan Collins to Ted Cruz in opposition to what the new Biden administration is trying to do to this country,” he added.

McConnell himself echoed many of Cheney’s attacks against Trump, blaming him for the events at the Capitol.

The Kentucky senator said Trump’s supporters were “assaulting the Capitol in his name” and “carried his banners” while “screaming their loyalties to him.” He said where the rioters’ loyalties rested “was obvious” and unsurprising, given the falsehoods Trump promoted to his supporters about the election being stolen from him.

Liz Cheney: ‘The Republican Party Is At A Turning Point’

Amid the news that Republicans could remove Cheney from her leadership position in the House, she penned a Washington Post op-ed on Wednesday.

In it, she called on the GOP to avoid “the dangerous and anti-democratic Trump cult of personality.”

“The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution,” she wrote.

She added, “In the immediate wake of the violence of Jan. 6, almost all of us knew the gravity and the cause of what had just happened — we had witnessed it firsthand.”
