Corvallis, OR – Police on Saturday fatally shot a man armed with a knife at a Corvallis hotel.
Authorities say Corvallis Police Officers received a call at 3:40AM about a man trespassing at a Days Inn Hotel on 9th Street. Employees told dispatchers the man was acting aggressively and was attempting to enter guests’ rooms.
Officers arrived and made contact with the man, later identified as 32-year-old Jeffrey Appelt, who was armed with a knife.
Bodycam footage has already been released for this incident. The footage shows an officer first make contact with Appelt near the hotel lobby. Appelt can be heard yelling “Leave me alone!” and “I’ll kill you!” to the officer. Appelt begins to chase the officer yelling “I’ll kill you!” several times as well as “you’re dead!”
In a statement, the Benton County District Attorney’s Office said the officer saw Appelt pull an object from his pocket before chasing the officer through the parking lot.
The footage shows Appelt, who has an object in his hand, and then the sound of a taser being fired is heard. It’s unclear if Appelt was hit by the taser darts.
The officer then turns back toward the suspect, who had stopped chasing him, and can be heard on the radio saying “he has a knife” and asking for back-up. The officer can be seen now following Appelt, who was near the hotel lobby doors.
A second officer can be seen physically engaging Appelt near the door, but he broke free and fled on foot.
Footage from a dash cam on a third officer’s vehicle shows the officer arriving at the hotel. Appelt can be seen in the parking lot, and begins running toward the third officer with the object still in his hand. The officer exited the vehicle and can be heard yelling “Stop! Drop the knife!” as Appelt continues to advance toward him.
“When Appelt came in close proximity to the officer, and his open patrol vehicle in which there was a loaded AR15- rifle and shotgun, the third officer fired his pistol,” Benton County prosecutors said in a statement.
The dash cam captures the sound of five shots being fired by the officer, but the shooting is off-camera.
Appelt was struck multiple times and died at the scene. The district attorney’s office said two knives were located at the scene.
There were no reports of any other injuries.
