Back in May of 2020, San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced that the city would be creating, “Safe Sleeping Villages,” for homeless individuals. Within these areas the city would provide homeless people with a place to put their tent, 24 hour security, food, bathrooms and other various services. What the Mayor forgot to include was the astronomical cost for each tent.
To date these areas have serviced 262 tents with each tent costing an average of $61,000, all to be paid for by the tax payers of San Francisco. With $16.1 million the city has allocated for “Sleeping Safe Villages,” it is a small portion of the $300 million it spends annually on homeless programs.
Mayor Breed claimed that the “Safe Sleeping Villages” were setup during the Coronavirus pandemic because there were limited options for some of the homeless population to help keep them safe. The city also put together a hotel program during that time period which provided shelter to numerous homeless people in various hotels, but unfortunately it had many downfalls. It was not monitored properly and many of the homeless were using the spaces as places to get drunk and high while not getting the services they needed.
However, the cost per night of the hotel program was cheaper by $82 per night and eligible for reimbursement due to the fact that it was considered a group shelter.
Despite the fact that San Francisco has $300 million for homelessness programs each year they are struggling to cover the 2020 costs from the programs they implemented during the coronavirus pandemic.
