Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was wise not to take the bait offered by the immediately former president on Tuesday. Mud wrestling with Trump is never a good idea.
Desperate for attention now that the Senate impeachment trial is over, Trump needed media to keep his acolytes on the constant hook. So he attacks McConnell and his wife. Class act.
Though Trump, still at risk of criminal and civil actions, being investigated in both Georgia and New York, and still facing possible congressional moves, may soon get more attention than he desires. In the meantime, while McConnell is trying to hold the party together, Trump conducts his own personal political inquisitions. That could get tedious, especially to donors and pros whom Trump can’t do without if he makes another run.
As such, the former president may be riding high with Republicans now. But with a reduced megaphone and reminders like this of why he lost in November, the bloom could come off that rose long before 2024.
FNC: “Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was silent Tuesday night into Wednesday morning after former President Donald Trump lit into him in a lengthy statement calling on Republican senators to abandon McConnell and threatening primary challenges to incumbents.
‘Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again,’ Trump said Tuesday. ‘Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First.’ Trump also attacked McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who was Trump’s transportation secretary but resigned after the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. He said, ‘McConnell has no credibility on China because of his family’s substantial Chinese business holdings. ‘ ”
This is Trump trying to deflect attention from the fact that he lost Georgia and the Senate with his attacks on Republicans, not to mention his riling up of his loonier followers to attack the Capitol. The former president is lashing out to get attention because that is his primary purpose at this point. Not conservatism, and not the Republican Party, but his own ends. Granted, which is not unheard of in politics. Trump brooks no opposition, only blind obedience and boot licking, when it comes to his own ends. That’s why he picked this fight with McConnell. The Senate Leader’s great sin to Trump? He dared to stand up to him.
