Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) went on MSNBC on Wednesday night to say that theRepublican base is “becoming looney tunes” after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene reportedly got a standing ovation from GOP lawmakers during a hearing in which they voted not to remove her from her committees.

Democrats had called for Greene to be removed from her committees after controversial past social media posts of hers came to light. In these posts, she allegedly made controversial comments about 9/11, school shootings, and Democrat lawmakers.

“The Republicans truly have lost their way. Their party is destroyed. Their base now is conspiracy theorists. It’s cowards, it’s opportunists, it’s grifters and sadly they’re becoming the looney tunes,” Omar told MSNBC host Chris Hayes. “These are people who we can’t take serious [sic]. They’re not here to do the people’s business. They are here to just be obstructionists and make a mockery of not just our government, but our country.”

Omar went on to say that she believes this kind of problem in the Republican Party runs much deeper than meets the eye.,

“It is going to be a long road because these are the children that are born out of a white supremacist movement that is taking over the base of the Republican party,” Omar said. “And we have to wait and see if they are willing to do the hard work of dealing with this awful, toxic, really deadly, white supremacist, fascist America that they have unearthed.”

This comes after Omar released a statement condemning a move by Republicans to remove her from her own committee assignments in the wake of what is happening to Greene:

“Let’s be clear: this is a desperate smear rooted in racism, misogyny, and Islamophobia. Marjorie Taylor Greene has incited violence against her fellow Members of Congress, repeatedly singling out prominent women of color.

She actively encouraged the insurrection on the Capitol that threatened my life and the life of every Member of Congress, and resulted in multiple deaths. She ran a campaign ad holding an assault rifle next to my face. She came to the Capitol demanding that me and Rep. Tlaib swear in on the Christian bible instead of the Quran.

The House Republican Caucus, instead of holding her accountable, is now fanning the flames. Republicans will do anything to distract from the fact that they have not only allowed but elevated members of their own caucus who encourage violence. It’s time to stop whitewashing the actions of the violent conspiracy theorists, who pose a direct and immediate threat to their fellow Members of Congress and our most fundamental democratic processes.”

It remains to be seen how this will all play out.
