The state, like any organism, has first duties of survival and growth. The virus restrictions on citizens and commerce have given the state, from the federal level to the local, heretofore unknown powers. And they like it.

They like it primarily because they don’t have to abide by it, as evidenced by Joe Biden in a photo op the very same day he called for new mask protocols. We’ve also seen it from numerous governors and other elected officials over the last year. Rules are only for the little people.

But they like it more because it gives them direct power over many everyday facets of your life. When you go out, how you work, how you interact with others, whether you even have a job, is decided not by you or market forces. It is dealt with by faceless gray automations you will never meet or converse with.

And the best part? It’s self-regenerating. Just when the 95 percent plus recovery rate may start to have some question the scare, or when a vaccine comes online, viola! Other strains are found and we’re back to square one. How convenient.

Thus asking government to deal with this is a self-defeating proposal. It’s the same with term limits. There you’re asking people, the political class, who benefit from the status quo to overturn that status quo to their own detriment. Looked around DC lately? Think we’ll see a return to a pre-Covid lifestyle or term limits anytime soon? Why should they? Where is the incentive for the kind of elected official who would be asked to support such a thing to actually do it?

So, what do we do? Kind of easy. We take a cue from Rosa Parks and non-violently resist. Unless you’re an idiot who wears a mask when you’re driving alone, outdoors, or at home alone (yes, there are people like this), then you merely stop wearing the mask in normal everyday situations. Yes, you will encounter push back. As did Rosa Parks. But if enough people stand their ground then businesses and the state will sniff the wind and act accordingly because however compromised, there still is a ballot box and it still works in some places.

Now, some governors are hip to this, that being to either push the Biden victory over Covid-19 narrative, like Cuomo. Or they never signed on in the first place, like DeSantis and Noem. Either way, now is the time to push them. Perhaps a Burning of the Mask Festival or a maskless march to a statehouse. A march with no fuss, no bother, no theatrics, and no masks. Let them try to arrest thousands, tens of thousands. But the alternative, to keep playing this game at the behest and amusement of the political class, has grown tedious. Time to end it.
