Given the 14 seat pickup the Republicans garnered in November, the GOP in the House is feeling strong and confident. There are many new members, but perhaps none so aggressive in standing up for her views as Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia.
Greene is unapologetic in her views on the corrupt result of the presidential election and she is a take no prisoners brawler when it comes to Covid-19 restrictions. She brought that attitude to the floor of the House on Sunday.
FNC: “Incoming Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and another new Republican House member were involved in a dispute over coronavirus masks as the 117th Congress met for the first time on Sunday, journalist Jake Sherman reported. Greene and the unidentified Republican appeared to tell floor staff they would not put on masks, Sherman reported.
‘Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi changed the COVID rules because she is desperate to cling to the gavel. No one can attack me about masks, when Pelosi is sending Democrats to the floor with positive COVID tests to vote for her for Speaker,’ Greene wrote on Twitter in an apparent reference to Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., who will be allowed to vote on the floor after announcing Dec. 28 that she tested positive for coronavirus.”

Pelosi and the Democrats will be seeing a lot more Republican rebellion in the near future. Kevin McCarthy is leading other hard chargers as well including Burgess Owen and Nancy Mace. Given their single digit majority, Democrats will also be watching for their own moderates, like Abby Spanberger of Virginia, to make common cause with Republicans on some issues and make life miserable for Nancy Pelosi.
Democrats also know that the president will keep the base on fire, as Republicans likely pick up the House in 2022. That is, if usual historical trends continue. That puts some Democrat moderates in an interesting position. They can ally with Republicans on some issues and perhaps leverage that into consideration from Speaker McCarthy in 2023. Or they can play hard ball and get shut out of any significant role in the next Congress. That will be especially true if hard left Democrats gain in the 2022 congressional election.
Marjorie Taylor Greene could help lead that kind of charge. Her aggressive populism and seeming joy in political combat with the Democrats make her a likely media darling of the Right and a nemesis of the Left. She could become the Right’s answer to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But one thing we can be certain of this, will not be the last time Greene makes waves in the House. Her can do spirit will go over well with the populist base of the Republican Party and her already on display in your face attitude will make her a Republican Democrats love to hate.
