The political world is strange this holiday season. AOC, the president, and Bernie Sanders are kind of making common cause on the virus bailout bill and Ilhan Omar is taking on AOC on the vaccine. Weirder things have happened, but not by much.
FNC: “Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., criticized her fellow lawmakers over the weekend for putting themselves ahead of frontline workers and vulnerable populations who she says should receive the coronavirus vaccine first. As members of Congress began to receive doses, Omar said on Twitter that it was ‘shameful’ for lawmakers to be prioritized for the vaccine. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., were among those who received vaccinations on Friday – part of a campaign to encourage Americans to get the shot themselves. Omar’s fellow Squad member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., received a dose over the weekend and made herself available to answer questions about the experience on social media. Vice President Mike Pence publicly received his vaccine at the White House on Friday, along with his wife, Karen Pence, and Surgeon General Jerome Adams. Biden was vaccinated publicly on Monday, while Dr. Fauci received the Moderna vaccine on Tuesday.”
There was a saying in the US Army, “Officers eat last.” Omar is right. Any politician, any one of them, who says they are taking the vaccine to give the public encouragement to take it is lying through their teeth. First, as if the public had confidence in the courage of politicians to use themselves as guinea pigs for the common good. Second, these pols just don’t want the virus and are cutting in line to make sure they don’t get it. Reprehensible behavior, but not unexpected.

“We are not more important [than] frontline workers, teachers, etc. who are making sacrifices [every day],” Omar wrote. “Which is why I won’t take it. People who need it most, should get it.” Again, she’s right. Front line medical workers, the elderly, cops, firefighters, the military, all should get it before one elected official gets one dose.

I’ve talked to Nancy Mace several times and I think she’s a class act. When she says something you can bet it is right and reasoned out. That Omar agrees with her is an oddity, but one must give credit where credit is due.
“Millions of Americans are waiting for shots, many of whom are workers on the front lines of this pandemic,” tweeted Democrat Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia, who was among those to receive one. “I am not more important than they are, but national leaders must lead by example.” Horse manure Rep. Beyer. We need more like Nancy Mace in Congress, not you. Omar? Give her this one. And that’s all.
