Dr. Anthony Fauci is backtracking like crazy right now, saying that we don’t need to cancel Christmas immediately after calling for us to do exactly that.
A Washington Post came out on Thursday stating that Christmas gatherings could cause a spread of COVID-19 that is even worse than the one that happened after Thanksgiving. Fauci was quoted in the article as saying that we can’t afford to “run away from the data” even though it will be painful to miss time with family.
After the report was published, Fauci was hit with accusations that he was calling for Christmas to be cancelled, but he later told Fox News that this was “nonsense.”
“I’ve heard and seen tweets saying, ‘Fauci says cancel Christmas,'” he said. “Nonsense. I’ve never said that.”
However, this directly contradicts what Fauci himself told the BBC just one day before on Wednesday.
“It is a cancel Christmas message in effect?” he was asked, to which he replied, “Yes, in some respects it is, unfortunately.”
Fauci was singing a very different tune one day later, when he said we don’t need to cancel Christmas after all.
“I’m not saying that everyone should cancel the family gathering, I’m saying that people will need to make individual choices,” Fauci explained.
“When you’re talking about having a congregate setting for dinner — not cancel the family aspect — but you have some Christmas dinners people bring friends and others in who travel from different parts of the country. You could have 15, 20 people at a dinner. That’s really somewhat risky,” he continued. “You can do a modified version of that.”
“You don’t have to cancel things — you can still spend time with your family,” Fauci later added. “I’m just asking people to be careful when it comes to travel that may not be necessary, travel that you can avoid. And when you get together, try to make some limitation to it.”
It makes it awfully hard to “follow the science,” as the left loves to say, when we are getting such mixed messages.
