Sprinting towards an uncertain finish, President Trump got an uproarious reception in Iowa on Wednesday. He won the state handily in 2016. Now, polls are much closer.

Trump and Biden were tied at 47% apiece among likely voters in Iowa, according to a Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll released Sept. 22. At the rally at Des Moines airport the president referenced a poll by Focus on Rural America that showed him leading Biden by 6 percentage points, 50% to 44% in Iowa. But if he was up 6 points, would he be there now? Or would he more likely be spending time there if it was a real battleground state?

Fox News picks up the action, “President Trump made a grand entrance at a campaign rally in Iowa on Wednesday night, with Election Day less than three weeks away. Soon after Air Force One rolled up to the rally site at Des Moines International Airport — with the Survivor song ‘Eye of the Tiger’ playing in the background — the president opted to walk to the rally stage, leading a group of Secret Service agents and official vehicles on route to a hangar where a lively crowd awaited to hear him speak.”

“Nobody has ever done (more) for Iowa and the Farm Belt and the farmers and all. … I saved ethanol. Ethanol is safe…For me to only be up six, I’m a little bit concerned, I’ll tell you that. Because nobody’s going to do for Iowa what I did for Iowa,” said Trump at the event. Concerned when you’re up by 6 in this election cycle?

He also attacked Joe Biden and son Hunter Biden for shady business dealings, “Vice President Biden, you owe the people of America an apology because it turns out, you are a corrupt politician…Let’s face it, Joe is shot.”

Trump’s instincts are smart, as he tries to break through the media blackout on the Biden Burisma meeting. Not only most of the major media are MIA, but social media is spiking the story as well. So much so that Twitter chief Jack Dorsey may be called before the Senate Judiciary Committee to explain why they tried to kill the story. Twitter has since apologized. But by then the damage had been already done.

The president needs the last debate, a head to head, to make the case that Biden and his son are crooks and that the media, by their actions, have proved themselves yet again to be Democrat lap dogs.

But Biden may play it smart and go with his increasing momentum, thus laying low and out of Trump’s direct range. However, this could backfire, as the president will taunt him mercilessly about ducking a last debate. As Election Day grows closer both sides will go with the contrast message and then closer in, if they follow an empirical playbook, with a positive message. But the president doesn’t follow anybody’s playbook but his own. Stay tuned.
