From face masks to standing six feet apart, every expert has their own opinion when it comes to fighting the deadly virus that is COVID-19. And while a vaccine is being promised, a Stanford University Professor of Medicine claims the only way to get rid of the disease is to eradicate our entire society as we know it.

Speaking at a virtual roundtable with the Republican Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, the professor Jay Bhattacharya made the grim announcement. Since the first lockdowns in March, Bhattacharya has been an outspoken voice against the ongoing safety measures, saying they will do little to stop the spread of COVID-19.

During the roundtable, Bhattacharya didn’t mix words when he said, “[W]e know that we’re going to have to destroy our society in order to get it. We’ll have to get rid of all of our freedoms; we’ll have to make sure that very few people interact with each other.” The professor went on to say that the price is so high that it is almost not even worth it.

But what about all those countries that have seen their COVID numbers drop? Those countries like France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Germany all used severe lockdown tactics to help fight the COVID virus. And while they did see numbers drop for a few weeks, many have seen case spikes with some countries having worse numbers than when it started back in spring.

Although a grim prediction, Bhattacharya believes the decision to fight COVID isn’t up to the scientist, doctors, or even the government. He said, “it’s up to non-scientists to decide whether it’s worth it. You can’t put one person on a pedestal and ask them to make that decision for society, and you shouldn’t elevate one person as the arbiter of all the right things to do on infectious disease.”

With the worldwide case surpassing 35 million and the death toll reaching over 1 million, people and governments all around the globe are pushing scientists and doctors to find a vaccine. In its short lifespan, COVID-19 has toppled one of the greatest economies in history and changed the way humans interact forever. Left untreated, well even Bhattacharya didn’t have an answer for that.
