House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sent a chilling warning to President Donald Trump on Thursday about what will happen if the election is decided by the House.

“We have all sorts of opportunities to take down that one vote,” Pelosi said during a press conference, according to Fox News.

“There ain’t no light at the end of the tunnel for you in the House of Representatives,” she added, referring to President Trump.

If there is a deadlock in the Electoral College or if neither candidate receives the majority of votes, the twelfth amendment states that a “contingent election” is to be held, with the House deciding the results. In this situation, each House state delegation votes as a whole for one candidate, instead of each representative getting a vote. Which candidate that is voted for is determined by the tallies of each representative within the delegation.

This means that the presidency is decided by who controls more state delegations, instead of by who controls the House. At this time, Republicans control 26 delegations and Democrats control 22. Pennsylvania has a tie, while Michigan has a 7-6 plurality for Democrats, with one independent, Justin Amash, who leans right.

Contingent elections are exceedingly rare and have only happened three times, with each one occurring in the 1800s.

This comes days after Trump said during a rally, “We have an advantage if we go back to Congress.”

Pelosi sent a letter to Democrats on Sunday warning them that this election may come down to the House.

Pelosi, in a Sunday letter to House Democrats, warned of the possibility that the election would come down to the House.

“The Constitution says that a candidate must receive a majority of the state delegations to win.  We must achieve that majority of delegations or keep the Republicans from doing so,” Pelosi wrote.

“Because we cannot leave anything to chance, House Majority PAC is doing everything it can to win more delegations for Democrats,” the speaker added. “It’s sad we have to have to plan this way, but it’s what we must do to ensure the election is not stolen.”
