The singer Linda Ronstadt launched a deranged attack on President Donald Trump this week, going so far as to call him the “new Hitler.” Not stopping there, she also said that “Mexicans are the new Jews.”

In an interview with The Guardian, Ronstadt said that she was horrified when Trump launched his presidential campaign.

“As soon as Trump came down that escalator and called Mexican rapists, I said, ‘This is the new Hitler and Mexicans are the new Jews,’” she recalled.

In another interview with Salon, Ronstadt said that she wants to see immigration laws be changed because she feels Mexicans deserve to be treated better in this country.

“They contribute so much,” she said. “America doesn’t realize [Mexicans] pay into the economy and can’t draw out of it. They are willing to do low paying jobs and that pushes people to higher paying jobs.”

Ronstadt gave these interviews to promote the documentary Linda and the Mockingbirds, which follows the singer on a trip she took to Mexico with students from California’s Los Cenzontles Cultural Arts Academy. She spoke out to recount a scene that was filmed on the United States’ border with Mexico.

“It was a few citizens walking around the streets shopping for groceries or picking up the newspaper. There were no hordes of brown people clawing to get across the border,” Ronstadt said. “But, all along, the Trump administration has been encouraging resentment of people from Mexico.”

She went on to explain that though she is of Mexican descent, her light skin and German surname allowed her to “pass.”

“People didn’t have a clue I was Mexican unless they grew up with me,” Ronstadt said.

She also said that she thinks the immigration and prison systems in America are in desperate need for reform.

“One thing is change immigration laws. Banks are making money from the cartels. Drug laws need to be changed,” she said. “Get rid of the private prison system; it’s like the new slavery with [cheap] labor and separating children and keeping them in inhumane conditions. It’s a violation of human rights laws.”
