In case you wondered just how odd, how weird, how not playing with a full deck Joe Biden can be, his confused reference to Adolf Hitler at Thursday’s Nashville debate should remove any doubt: the man is several crayons short of a box.

FNC: “Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden shocked viewers on Thursday with a bizarre reference to Adolf Hitler during the final presidential debate. Trump said he has a civil relationship with North Korea Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. ‘We’re not in a war, we have a good relationship,’ the president said.

‘Having a good relationship with leaders of other countries is a good thing,’ Trump said.

Biden shot back, ‘…We had a good relationship with Hitler before he in fact invaded Europe.’ ” I mean, what the hell?

Readers of this publication and this analyst’s social media feed had reactions to Biden’s completely ahistorical and brain-addled line.

Meg Gust: “Progressives were all aglow about fascism before the war. They agree on a LOT of things.”

CG Sidlett: “Chance the ‘fact checkers’ will notice? 0.”

Jim Marlier: “Idiot. Yeah we lend leased Hitler ships and planes….. oh yeah that was Russia and Britain never mind.”

Brandon Weichert: “No, but FDR did love him his Soviets.”

Who do you think would win the Presidency?

Marta Sosa: “I don’t recall reading that in history….. ??”

Matt Wilson: “I seem to recall from my study of history that FDR despised the guy from the start.”

Alecqs de Nullparte: “Right… That’s why US Ambassador to Germany was recalled in 1938. That’s why trade agreements were cancelled. All in good cheer… /s.”

These people are all correct. The history is clear enough. From the beginning of the Nazi movement in Germany in the 1920s the United States took a suspicious view of the vicious thugs in brown. When the National Socialists, yes-they were socialists, took power in 1933 new American president Franklin Roosevelt held a dim view of the regime.

As the 30s progressed and the Nazis and Hitler were quite clear in their insane plans and rabid antisemitism, the United States began to rearm and make common cause with the United Kingdom. We sold arms and supplies to the British and extended our naval security zone well into the Atlantic to protect conveys traveling across the ocean to Britain.

At no time was the relationship good or cordial. Granted, there were homegrown American Nazi organizations like the traitorous and vile American Bund. But they were not exactly fans of the Roosevelt administration. So any sane person must question the knowledge and judgment of a person who makes the assertion that this nation had “a good relationship” with Hitler.

There are some who are saying Biden was being sarcastic or comparing Hitler to Kim Jong Un. Uh, no. This is Joe Biden we’re talking about. The man has the mental clarity of a hailstorm at midnight. He didn’t pop off with a clever line. He proposed we were friends with Hitler when we were one of his most committed foes. Will he bring this kind of knowledge of history to the Oval Office? Let’s hope we don’t have to find out.
