Senior Republican sources have claimed that President Trump will nominate Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court vacancy.
Sources: Barrett Was “The Plan All Along”
CNN reported on Friday afternoon that multiple senior Republicans have said that Barrett will be Trump’s third Supreme Court nominee.
The president will make the official announcement on Saturday afternoon.
The sources stressed that the President could always make a change at the last minute, but that the “machinery is in motion” for Barrett to take the nomination.
CNN says that the White House has declined to comment on the speculation.
“She was the plan all along. She’s the most distinguished and qualified by traditional measures. She has the strongest support among the legal conservatives who have dedicated their lives to the court,” a former senior administration official said.
“She will contribute most to the court’s jurisprudence in the years and decades to come,” the official continued.
It is unclear whether Barrett has been told she is the intended nominee.
A Strong Conservative Voice For SCOTUS
Barrett has a long track record of solid conservative rulings during her tenure as a judge on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, where she has sat since 2017.
She has said that abortion is “always immoral,” and has voted as such in decisions.
She joined the dissenting ruling in the case Box vs Planned Parenthood of Indiana, standing by legislation that would have required doctors to notify the parents of any minor who decided to seek an abortion.
It is likely her devout Catholic faith plays a role in her opinions.
“She is the perfect combination of brilliant jurist and a woman who brings the argument to the court that is potentially the contrary to the views of the sitting women justices,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List.
Barrett has also stood by the Second Amendment, time and again. In a 2019 case, Barrett said that denying the right to bear arms to all non-violent felons relegates the Second Amendment to a “second-class right.”
She further defended the Trump administration’s “public charge” rule, that prohibited the entry of legal immigrants into the country who may take out and rely on federal benefits, dissenting against the rest of the panel.
Democrats Don’t Want Her On The Supreme Court
It is clear that Barrett is a strong conservative pick for the Supreme Court, and many on the left are not pleased.
Robert Reich, Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton, whined that she would “lock in a majority to overturn Roe v Wade.”
Make no mistake: Amy Coney Barrett would lock in a majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. She'll gut what's left of our campaign finance laws and voting rights protections. Environmental protections, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and limits on corporate power would all disappear. https://t.co/AfR2Xz480W

Amy Coney Barrett doesn’t belong on the Supreme Court. Let alone any court. #NoSCOTUSforAmy

The Human Rights Campaign said that Barrett has a “track record of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric,” arguing against “trans rights, marriage equality, and reproductive rights,” so therefore “she shouldn’t be on the Supreme Court.”
It's no surprise Trump would want to nominate Amy Coney Barrett, a judge with a track record of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.
She's argued against trans rights, marriage equality and reproductive rights — and she shouldn't be on the Supreme Court. #OurCourt https://t.co/D4xUWcYa4I
