While what you are about to read might sound like a story from The Onion, it’s strangely true. As efforts to stop Covid-19 are ongoing, some schools have decided to ramp up safety by subjecting their students to outlandish rules and regulations. For some children, it will now be against the rules to talk during lunch…

Since March, many schools around the country were closed to help stop the spread of Covid-19. Even with schools opening back up, parents were worried to send their children back without guaranteeing their health. As face masks were mandatory, social media proved kids and teens weren’t adhering to the rules, leading to a rise in cases. Now, four districts in Rhode Island have decided that on top of masks there will be not talking during the most COVID-vulnerable time – lunch.

For some experts, the move to “silent lunches” could help stop the spread among children. One said, “The difference between breathing and talking is about 75-fold in regards to respiratory emissions, like the droplets and small aerosols that come out. So a silent lunch, where you take away the interactions of walking down hallways and mixing pods, actually becomes a safer option than moving the kids.”

But not all parents agree. The topic of silent lunches has been a debate among suburban housewives joining the PTA for years. In the past, silent lunches have been used to punish children for misbehaving during school. Some believe the children will see this as being punished for something they can’t control. The principle of one of the Rhode Island schools disagrees as he said it, “is not meant to be a punishment but rather to keep [children] safe.”

While some schools have already instituted the new silent lunch measure, it’s unclear if others will adopt the method in the coming weeks. With such outrageous steps being taken it is only a matter of time before the coveted recess is banned in schools, ending the era of physical activity altogether.
