While much about the coronavirus is still unknown, many states have put requirements on schools and universities to help stop the spread of this deadly virus. Well, it appears the best way to fight Covid-19 is to simply protest more. That is exactly what faculty and students are doing today at Radford University in Virginia as the school is allowing a Black Lives Matter protest to happen, drawing hundreds of people with no social distancing guidelines.

What could make matters even worse? The university president Brain Hemphill sent out an email excited about “The Bigger Picture March and Rally.” His email states, “As we move forward together in sharing a united message that Black Lives Matter, I am asking members of Highlander nation to pledge in serving as active and vocal participants by advocating for equality and fairness now and well into the future. I look forward to joining with our passionate students as part of The Bigger Picture March and Rally to be held on the afternoon of September 19, 2020.”

Back when Covid-19 first hit, Radford University took necessary steps to help stop the spread. They prohibited any outdoor or indoor events, and there could be no groups larger than 10 people. The school was strict with the rules as some students even received suspensions for not adhering to the new laws.

After Hemphill’s email was sent out to the student body, many criticized the school for the rally when, in fact, there is a deadly virus we still know very little about. Instead of canceling the event, Hemphill and the school are allowing the protest to continue but says there is a misunderstanding among the people disagreeing with them. According to Hemphill, the rally will obey all social distancing laws and nobody without a mask will be allowed to participate.

While wearing masks might be helpful, neither the Campus Reform nor Hemphill could give an example of how they would enforce the 10-person group rule. With numerous rallies taken place around America, studies have already started to show that protests are a significant factor in the spreading of Covid-19.
