Meghan Markle got some bad news in court this week as her lawsuit against the British tabloid The Mail rages on when a judge ruled in the publication’s favor over the contents of the biography “Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Family.”

Deadline reported that Meghan is suing The Mail for publishing a letter she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle, that she claims was meant to be private. In a hearing on Tuesday, The Mail’s parent company of Associated Newspapers attempted to amend its written evidence to include the claim that Meghan “co-operated with the authors of the recently published book Finding Freedom to put out their version of certain events.” The publication argued that this undermined her claim to privacy.

Meghan’s lawyer Justin Rushbrooke denied that the royal had given information to “Finding Freedom” authors Carolyn Durrand and Omid Scobie.

“The claimant and her husband did not collaborate with the authors on the book, nor were they interviewed for it, nor did they provide photographs to the authors for the book,” he said.

Master Francesca Kaye did not see things Meghan’s way, however, as she ruled that Associated Newspapers could use the book in its evidence. Yet the news wasn’t all bad for Meghan, since the judge also said that the royal is entitled to appeal her decision in the Court of Appeal. She also issued a warning to Associated Newspapers that the book claim could quickly collapse, should the case go to trial.

This comes after author Scobie told the podcast Heirpod that Meghan and her husband Prince Harry have been “thriving” and had “taken their careers as philanthropists to a whole other level” since they stepped down as senior royals back in March.

“It shows how much they were held back by tradition, hierarchy and stubbornness within the institution,” he said, adding that the couple is “absolutely happy” at this time.

“This is the couple operating in a way they were desperate to for some time but couldn’t for a number of reasons, many of which tie into what is considered too politically sensitive or not,” Scobie said.
